I created with the children a whole puppets theatre world. A world full of imagination, of personal and fictive characters and stories, a world where it is fun to create, colorful and alive.  It was a long term project, with different aspect to it; the story, the puppets and the performance.

This  project was inspired from a visit to Liat Binyamini’s studio as I called her in my search for inspiration around the puppets world. She unfolded before me her many tresors, puppets, beautiful papier-mache marionettes and this theatre box. Liat generously explained to me the working of this magical box and its puppets, from here the project was born. Thank-you Liat.

The making of the story:  (soon to be published)

The children were asked to invent a personal story or find inspiration through a book that they liked. They wrote the story with their own words, sharing feelings and personal experiences, like a diary. Each story was bounded in a small individual paper book; the pages were illustrated with their own drawings. From the story, each child chose up to 3 characters that he created as a puppet.

There are several techniques to create a puppet: Finger puppets, socks puppets, papier- mache marionette and more … It will depend on the time you dispose of and the abilities of the children.

I advise to start with the socks puppet. It a happy puppet that likes to talk because of its big mouth! And it has this joyful funny look.

The making of the puppet Theater Box:

The individual Theatre is both the theatre the children will use to perform their play and other invented stories and it is also the box they store all their puppets inside, waiting to come to life through stories. It’s practical, esthetic and sized for the children.

We will be using the technique of collage to decorate the box. It can be done as a decorative setting or following the theme of the story the children wrote.

Material needed

Cardboard box of packs of 6 x 1 liter Water or soda

White acrylic paint and other colors

Sponge

White glue

News paper and magazines

Wrapping paper

8mm wooden stick the length of the box width

Fabric and tulle

Knitting wool or ribbon

Threads and needles

Large Buttons

Thin ribbon

Scissors

Cutter

How to prepare

Paint the cardboard box with white acrylic using a small sponge. It’s easy for the children to handle on large surface. Let dry

Prepare for the collage:

Cut out from news paper and magazines pictures that will make up the collage according to the theme you want to represent. You can also prepare a set of cuts just for the back ground coloring. Put a side.

There are several possibilities at this stage; you can chose according to the children’s age and independence in working.

1. Cover the whole box with collage. The final result is exclusive. The process is long and asks for a lot of patience. The advantage of this process is that children are very independent in their work. They work alone.
2. Partially wrap the box with colorful wrapping paper. The detailed collage will take place in the front of the box. This is a quicker process but it needs the help of an adult when wrapping large size paper to match the size of the box.
3. Paint in a colorful acrylic color the box, and concentrate on the front of the box with a special and detailed collage. The box will have to be painted before starting the collage.

Pasting the collage:

Prepare a plate or low jar with white glue; add a little water to the glue to thin it. It will be easier for the children to spread. The best way to spread the glue is with one’s fingers, but if the children have a hard time with this use old paintbrushes.

Spread the glue on parts of the front side of the box. Glue the paper collage. Children work like a drawing, they slowly fill up the “page” with creativity and imagination. They have fun doing so and work independently at this stage. Remind them to be generous with the glue, it will disappear and leave a soft shinny glow at the end when it dries off.

Slowly cover the box on all sides except underneath. The top of the box also needs to be covered. This stage will take several days, when the children get tired, stop and start again the following days.

Cutting the openings :

In the front,

Cut out a double front door, like a window. Start about 8 cm above the bottom of the box. It enables to hide the hands of the children when performing. Leave a frame all around for the box to stay steady.

In the back,

Cut out a square shape without cutting out the bottom side. This door will open downwards. This opening is important to insert the hand with the puppet.

Painting the inside of the box:

I suggest painting the inside of the box in black to give a drama side to the box.

The inside of the front door can be painted in color, matching the collage. These doors stay open when the show begins.

Door set up:

Sew a large button on each front door of the theatre. And attach a small ribbon on one of the button. It will enable to close the doors when the theatre is inactive.

Do the same with the back door, one button on the box, on button on the door and a ribbon. The door now can close.

Curtain rail and Curtains:

Front curtains

The curtain rail is made out of a standard wood stick of about 8mm diameter.

Pierce two holes on each side of the box, (Upper right, and left side of the box, in front of the box) to slide the wooden stick.

Cut out two pieces of fabric that covers the whole window opening, taking into consideration the hems and the folding around the stick. Saw the hems and then saw the curtain rail folding.

You introduce at this point a new knowhow. Sewing. Children like to sew; they feel they are learning a knowhow that will enable them a lot creative independence.

For the curtains to open easily, saw a thick double thread on the upper right side of the left curtain. Run the thread into the folding until it comes out on the left side of the curtain. Make a small hole in the cardboard box near the curtain rail hole. Bring the thread of the curtain outside the box, leave about 10 cm hanging and finish with a few decorative beads. When you pull on this thread from outside the box it will open the curtains.

Do the same for the right side curtain. The sewing of the thread should be on the upper left side of the right side curtain.

Back curtains

I advise the back curtains to be slightly seen through, for the children to be able to see their hands and puppets. I used black tulle. It hides a little the faces of the children, to be able to concentrate on the show, but it leaves them in the picture!

Creating a handle:

The children create a handle to their individual theatre, so that they can easily carry it around. The handle can be made out of knitting wool that  they plait together.

Make two holes on each side of the box, on the top of the box. Insert the plait and then make a knot in the inside. The knot will hold the plait.

The individual theatre is ready! It’s a piece of art of it own.

יצירת תיאטרון בובות אישי

פרויקט זה נולד לאחר ביקור בסטודיו של ליאת בנימיני. כשארחה אותי אצלה פרסה בפני את עולם תיאטרון הבובות שלה- מלא אוצרות עד גדותיו- בובות אצבע,מריונטות יפהפיות מעיסת נייר וקופסת התיאטרון. בנדיבות היא חשפה בפני את מאחורי הקלעים של בניית הקופסא והבובות. תודה ליאת!

הילדים ואני יצרנו יחד עולם שלם של תיאטרון בובות. עולם מלא דמיון, של דמויות וסיפורים אישיים ודמיוניים. עולם צבעוני ומלא חיים בו שמח וכיף לנו ליצור.

זה היה פרוייקט ארוך טווח בעל אספקטים שונים: יצירת הדמויות והסיפור, בניית הדמויות והתיאטרון וההופעה עצמה.

כתיבת הסיפור – יפורסם בקרוב

הילדים התבקשו להמציא סיפור אישי או למצוא השראה באחד הספרים שהם אוהבים.

הם כתבו את הסיפור במילים שלהם. חולקים רגשות וחוויות אישיות כמו ביומן אישי. כל סיפור שנכתב נכרך לחוברת אישית קטנה בה הדפים צוירו ועוטרו בידי הילדים.

הילדים בחרו מהסיפור עד כ 3 דמויות אותן הם יצרו כבובות תיאטרון.

יצירת הבובות- יפורסם בקרוב

ישנן מספר דרכים ליצור בובות תיאטרון- בובת אצבע, בובת גרב,מריונטה מעיסת נייר ועוד.. הכל תלוי בזמן שעומד לרשותנו ובמיומנותם של הילדים.

אני ממליצה  להתחיל בבובת הגרב. זו בובה שמחה בעלת מראה מבדח ומלא חיים שאוהבת מאוד לדבר כי תמיד יש לה פה כלכך גדול!

קופסת תיאטרון אישית

התיאטרון האישי הוא  המקום בו הילדים יעלו את ההצגות שלהם וגם הקופסא בתוכה הם יאכסנו את  הבובות שלהם, בעודן מחכות להתעורר לחיים דרך סיפורים.  התוצאה אסתטית, פרקטית ומותאמת בגודלה לילדים.

נעזר בטכניקת הקולאז’ כדי לעטר את הקופסא. נוכל פשוט לקשט אותה ונוכל גם לבטא עליה חלק מנושאי  הסיפור שכתבו הילדים .

איך להכין

צבעו את קופסת הקרטון בצבע אקרילי לבן בעזרת ספוג קטן. בעזרתו קל לילדים להתמודד עם צביעת משטחים גדולים. הניחו לקופסא להתייבש.

הכנות לקולאז’-  גיזרו מעיתונים ומגזינים תמונות המתאימות לתיאטרון או לנושאים אותם אתם רוצים להציג. אתם יכולים גם לגזור תמונות או שטחי צבע שיתאימו ליצירת רקע עליו תציירו לאחר מכן. שימרו בצד את מה שגזרתם.

ישנן מספר אפשרויות בשלב זה. תוכלו לבחור ביניהן על פי גיל הילדים והעצמאות שלהם.

לכסות את כל הקופסא בקולאז’. התוצאה הסופית היא מרשימה. התהליך מעט ארוך ודורש סבלנות רבה. היתרון בתהליך זה הוא שהילדים מאוד עצמאיים במהלכו ועובדים לבד לחלוטין  *

לעטוף חלקית את הקופסא בניירות עטיפה צבעוניים. הקולאז’ המפורט יותר יהיה רק בחלק הקדמי של הקופסא. זהו תהליך מהיר יותר אך כאן נדרשת עזרת מבוגר בעטיפת הקופסא בנייר העטיפה  *

לצבוע את הקופסא בצבעים אקריליים צבעוניים ולהתרכז בחלק הקדמי של הקופסא ליצירת קולאז’ מיוחד ומפורט. צבעו את הקופסא והניחו לה להתייבש לפני התחלת הקולאז  *

הדבקת הקולאז

הכינו צלחת או קערית שטוחה של דבק פלסטי, הוסיפו מעט מים לדבק על מנת לדלל אותו, כך קל יותר לילדים לעבוד איתו. קל יותר לילדים למרוח את הדבק בעזרת האצבעות אך אם הם מעדיפים אחרת, אפשר להשתמש במברשת צבע ישנה

מרחו את הדבק על חלקים מחזית הקופסא והדביקו את התמונות שגזרתם. ילדים עובדים על קולאז’ כאילו זה ציור שהם מציירים על דף, לאט לאט הם ממלאים את “דף” הקופסא ביצירתיות מלאת דמיון.         הם מאוד נהנים מעבודה זו ועובדים בצורה עצמאית . הסבירו להם שטוב במקרה הזה להשתמש בהרבה דבק מפני שלאחר ההדבקה כשהוא מתייבש,הוא נעלם ומשאיר אחריו שכבה נאה בוהקת

לאט לאט כסו את הקופסא מכל הצדדים כולל החלק העליון, חוץ מהתחתית.

זוהי פעילות לטווח ארוך אשר דורשת סבלנות ואורכת מספר ימים, לכן כאשר הילדים מתעייפים ממנה הניחו לקופסא וחזרו אליה לאחר מספר ימים כשמעיין היצירתיות והסבלנות מתחדש.

חיתוך הדלתות בחזית

חיתכו דלת קדמית בעלת שתי כנפיים, כמו חלון. התחילו כ10 סמ’ מעל תחתית הקופסא. זה מאפשר לילדים להחביא את ידיהם בזמן ההופעה. השאירו מסגרת מסביב לקופסא כדי שתשאר יציבה.

חיתוך הדלת מאחור

חיתכו מרובע והשאירו את החלק התחתון. דלת זו תפתח כלפי מטה. הדלת הזו חיונית כי היא מאפשרת להכניס את הידיים עם הבובות לתוך במת התיאטרון.

צביעת החלק הפנימי של הקופסא

אני מציעה לצבוע את פנים הקופסא בשחור,על מנת לתת לה אפקט דרמתי .

פנים הדלתות בחזית יכול להצבע בצבעים צבעוניים שיתאימו לקולאז. הדלתות האלה נשארות פתוחות כשההצגה מתחילה.

עיצוב הדלת

תפרו כפתור גדול על כל דלת בצידה החיצוני וחברו סרט קטן לאחד מהכפתורים. עכשיו הדלת יכולה להסגר.

וילון ומוט לוילון

וילונות קדמיים

מוט הוילון עשוי ממוט עץ עגול סטנדרטי- דיבל עץ- בקוטר 8 מ”מ .

נקבו חור בצדו הימני עליון ובצדו השמאלי עליון של הקופסא, על מנת להעביר דרכם את מוט הוילון.חתכו שתי פיסות בד שיכסו את כל פתח החלון הקדמי- קחו בחשבון את השוליים ואת הקפל מסביב למוט. תפרו את השוליים ואז את הקפל מסביב למוט.

בשלב זה אתם בעצם מציגים לילדים מיומנות חדשה- תפירה.  ילדים מאוד אוהבים לתפור, הם חשים שהם לומדים מיומנות שתקנה להם הרבה עצמאות יצירתית.

על מנת שהוילונות יחליקו בקלות לאורך המוט בעת פתיחתם, תפרו בקצה אחד של כל וילון חוט עבה כפול והשחילו אותו לאורך המוט, בתוך הקפל, עד שיצא לקצהו השני של הוילון. נקבו חור בשני צידי קופסת הקרטון בסמוך לנקבים של מוט הוילון. העבירו את החוטים שתפרתם לוילונות דרך הנקבים החדשים, כך שיצאו מחוץ לקופסת הקרטון . השאירו כ 10 סמ’ מהחוטים תלויים מחוץ לקופסא וחברו בסופם חרוזים קטנים. כשתמשכו בחוטים שמחוץ לקופסא יפתחו הוילונות. בוילון הימני תפירת החוט תהיו בצידו העליון השמאלי  ובוילון השמאלי התפירה תעשה בצד העליון הימני.

וילון אחורי

אני ממליצה שהוילון האחורי יהיה מעט שקוף, כך שהילדים המציגים יוכלו לראות את ידיהם ואת הבובות בזמן ההופעה. אני משתמשת בבד טול שחור המטשטש את פני הילדים המציגים, כך שהקהל יכול להתרכז בבובות אך עדיין לראות מעט את הילדים העומדים מאחריו

חתכו בד טול לריבוע גדול פי ארבעה מהריבוע של פתח הדלת האחורית. קפלו אותו לארבע כך שיווצר וילון עבה מעט. הכינו פס בריסטול דק והדקו אותו אל רוחב הוילון שיצרתם כדי לתפוס יחד את כל חלקי הוילון. חברו את פס הבריסטול של הוילון אל חלקו העליון של הפתח האחורי של קופסת הקרטון כך שיכסה אותו

יצירת ידית נשיאה

הילדים מתבקשים ליצור ידית  לתיאטרון שלהם כך שיוכלו לשאתו בקלות ממקום למקום. היא יכולה לדוגמא להיות עשויה מצמר אותו סרגו הילדים  בעצמם

נקבו שני חורים, אחד מכל צד של הקופסא בחלקה העליון. הכניסו דרכם את קצוות הידית וקישרו קשר מבפנים. הקשר יחזיק את הידית מחוברת לקופסא.

התיאטרון האישי מוכן!  זוהי יצירת אומנות בפני עצמה
